What did you do in the war, Daddy?

When our son was young he once asked us if we were at Woodstock.  We said no,  but we didn’t have an answer when he asked,  Why not?

He was disappointed,  I’m sure we went down a notch or two in his esteem.

He never asked if we rode the freedom bus,  or went to Washington to hear Dr. King,  or if we marched against the Vietnam War,  or burned a bra or a draft card.   Had he asked,  we would have had to say no.

And I still don’t have an answer when I ask myself,  Why not?

  • My daughter once asked me if I ever had sex before I married. I asked her why she wanted to know that. She said because her friends do that but she wanted to know if I would be upset if she did that. I said, yes because sex involved a lot of responsibility. That becoming pregnant when single would change the course of her life. But I still don’t know how to answer that question. So if your child asked the same question how would you answer?
