The cultural offerings in this town are amazing and seem to be endless – theatre, film, concerts, art exhibits, lectures, and my own guilty pleasure, literary discussions.
One place I can usually count on for a literary fix is the Columbia University Club on W 43 St. In addition to a great restaurant, a well-stocked bar, and a well-stocked library to boot, the Club presents lectures, readings, theatre outings and even a monthly book discussion group.
So I was delighted to read in the newsletter that the next book to be discussed is Leo Tolstoy’s masterpiece Anna Karenina, which happens to be real favorite of mine. What a great chance to read and discuss that book again!
Then I read this disclaimer: “Please note that the author will not be in attendance.”
Wow, that was such a disappointment I’m thinking of canceling my Columbia Club membership!

Clearly, Columbia didn't want to lure the audience in under false pretenses! Keep your membership!
Beautifully written.
OK Renee-Gail, I'll relent but if he doesn't show up for War & Peace I'm done!
Thanks Ang!
I love Anna Karenina, to the point where it may have contributed to my ruination; it also caused me to wear eyeglasses, as I read it in the Penguin way back when (at least it would be nice to think that was the reason). We should form an A.K. club, wear low cut black velvet dresses and date cads. What else is there to do??? Your piece was so inspirational I figured out finally how to use this damn comment section. . . .nice job!
Thanx Marilyn! There certainly is no shortage of cads out there!
I'm tempted to say, "Only in America!"
Touche!
