Walking thru my building lobby on my way out to the dry cleaners, I realized my Dominican doorman was staring at the elaborately embroidered caftan I was carrying on my arm, bought by my son on a trip to Kazakstan.
“This week is the Jewish holiday of Purim when we celebrate by getting drunk and dressing up in costumes.”, I explained with a smile.
“Oh yes, we know,” said our Irish concierge from behind the lobby desk, “because every year just about this time Mrs Fisher on the fifth floor asks to borrow a uniform and a hat from the shortest doorman on staff!”
There’s really no place like New York for the holidays, is there?

Cultural diversity in one positive attribute of life in New York.
Yes, so true Cassamdra!
I expect to see a photo of you in your gown on Facebook.
Will try!
Cassandrs, I’d like to see that exhibit too, perhaps we can meet there, let me know when you go!
You should send this to the
Metropolitan Diary in the NYTimes!
Too late! Once something is published, even in a blog, the Times won’t accept it. I’ve sent them lots of stuff and most was rejected, but can’t complain – they have published some!
I agree, this would have been perfect for the Diary!
Thanx P, maybe next Purim I’ll cheat and submit it to the Diary and hope all those NYTimes editors don’t read my blog!
Can I have a cookie please?
Absolutely Palma, they’re delicious! They’re called hamentashen, and are baked especially for Purim, but Hot & Crusty has them year round!
One more reason why I Love New York!
Yes Ang, one of many!
